A Haunted Christmas
A festive take on one of my favourite themes, this piece brings together the warmth of a traditional Christmas wreath with the wonderfully eerie atmosphere of a certain Californian haunted manor.
At the centre sits the grand mansion dressed for Christmas, surrounded by snow-covered gates, glowing windows and a few familiar ghostly residents. Around it, a deeply carved wreath of holly, berries and pinecones is woven together with a rich red ribbon, while our very tall festive visitor arrives bearing a Christmas present.
The whole design is finished with an ornate “Merry Christmas” plaque, aged in dark bronze and antique brass tones to give it the feel of an old mansion nameplate rather than a modern Christmas decoration.

How It’s Made

The piece begins as a digital 3D design, with the individual elements composed and adjusted specifically with CNC carving in mind. It is then carved from wood on my CNC machine over a number of hours, gradually revealing all the tiny architectural details, foliage, characters and decorative elements.
Once the machining is complete, the real transformation starts. The carving is cleaned and prepared before being entirely hand-painted, building the finish through multiple layers, washes, dry-brushing and highlighting.
Rather than using bright, modern Christmas colours, I chose a more aged palette of deep reds, muted holly greens, warm brick, antique whites and touches of copper and bronze. The recesses are deliberately kept darker while the raised details are picked out by hand, helping emphasise the depth of the carving and giving the whole piece an aged, slightly storybook quality.
The result is a one-off wooden Christmas decoration that sits somewhere between a traditional festive wreath and a piece of haunted mansion memorabilia — festive enough for Christmas, but with just enough ghostly mischief to make it unmistakably a KF Wood Design.
