A richly detailed Splash Mountain inspired carved wall piece, capturing the charm, colour and storytelling of the classic attraction.
The scene brings together some of the ride’s most recognisable elements — the mountain and waterfall at the centre, the Laughing Place tucked into the tree on the left, the briar patch surrounding the water, and a playful character scene on the right. Everything is framed with twisted branches and roots, helping the whole piece feel like a little storybook world carved out of the wood.
The separate Splash Mountain plaque along the bottom finishes the piece off without overpowering the main scene.
Rather than heavily painting the carving, the colour has been built up in softer layers so plenty of the natural timber texture and carved detail still shows through.
Designed as a display piece for anyone with a soft spot for classic theme park attractions and the stories behind them.

How It’s Made

he artwork starts as a digital design, where the individual parts of the scene are composed and developed into a detailed 3D relief model ready for CNC carving.
The design is then CNC carved from solid wood in several stages. Larger tools first remove the bulk of the material before progressively finer carving tools are used to pick out the characters, rockwork, foliage, water, lettering and smaller details.

Once the machining is finished, there is still plenty of hand work involved. The carving is cleaned and refined before the colouring begins.

The finish is built up using acrylic paints, transparent washes, shading and dry-brushed highlights, rather than simply applying solid blocks of colour. This helps emphasise the depth of the carving while allowing the wood grain and tool detail to remain part of the finished look.

Areas such as the mountain, water, foliage and timber frame are treated individually, with darker washes settling into the deeper parts of the carving and lighter highlights catching the raised surfaces.

Finally, the separate Splash Mountain plaque is finished and fitted before the whole piece receives a protective coating.

The result is a piece that combines digital sculpting, CNC carving and traditional hand finishing, so although the original design can be reproduced, every finished carving naturally ends up with its own small variations and character.
